چکیده
The additive manufacturing of composite structures can open possibilities in the design and fabrication devices but also demands new approaches. In this work, we use thermally reversible pastes to fabricate ceramic matrix (Al2O3) composites reinforced with continuous metallic fibres (steel). approach is based on micro-extrusion ceramic–metal filaments core–shell layered arrangements. These are employed dense light-weight cellular that combine stiffness strength shell fracture resistance energy absorption capabilities provided by metal core. be used extrude thin porous interlayers separating core shells create a weak fibre/matrix interphase. fabricated these exhibit higher compressive strengths than those from pure ceramics. works one two orders magnitude above (103 J/m2) while bending remain comparable 3D printed alumina (200–350 MPa). technique could easily extended other material combinations opening opportunities multi-material parts devices.

This paper describes current and on-going work in adapting Z-Corp 3D printers to operate with low-cost ceramic materials. The components produced with these clay-based ceramic powders can be fired to produce strong, complex and lightweight ceramic parts. The final material properties, including the porosity of the parts, can be controlled through the part design and, potentially, through additi...

We report on experimental evidence of pronounced global plasticity measured in monolithic Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 bulk metallic glass under both bending and unconfined compression loading conditions. A plastic strain of 20% is measured, never before seen in metallic glasses. Also, permanent deformation and a strain exceeding 3% before failure is observed during bending of 4 mm thick samples. To ...

Shear bands generally initiate strain softening and result in low ductility of metallic glasses. In this Letter, we report high-resolution electron microscope observations of shear bands in a ductile metallic glass. Strain softening caused by localized shearing was found to be effectively prevented by nanocrystallization that is in situ produced by plastic flow within the shear bands, leading t...
